Real People Do Real Things: Youth Futures

Not enough is being done for young people, it’s time we step up and do more.

Youth Futures is a community-led organisation based in South London, founded in January 2012. As other youth centres in the area closed due to a lack of funding, Youth Futures emerged in response to the needs of the young people to have a safe and supportive space to go. Since then, Youth Futures has established a large network of people who are keen to make a difference through their work with young people and the wider community. Youth Futures has grown and evolved a lot since it was founded, working with at risk young people in numerous ways. However, its work has been somewhat more reactive than proactive. In order to help young people in a lasting and meaningful way, the approach must be two fold. Firstly, a good charity is a good advocate. Youth Futures must be equipped to tell the stories and create the content necessary to highlight the issues facing young people in deprived areas daily.

The Basement and Nike Sportswear will donate the proceeds generated by the ‘Real People Do Real Things’ project to create a media production suite for use by the young people of Youth Futures. Equipped with the latest technology, the suite will act as a creative hub, allowing the community to create content that aims to educate the wider world on the struggles that young people are facing in deprived urban areas. The media suite will also act as a classroom for the young people. In this information driven economy, content is king. Experts in related areas, from photography and video production, to graphic design, web design and social media management, will be drafted in to provide them with the skills they need in a technology driven future.
