“I don’t consider myself a chef”, yet agrees to write for a cooking segment
It’s not often I have to write about myself so please allow me!! Anyways, I’m James, and at 32, I’m a fair bit older than the average Basement member! I was born and have spent most of my life in Saaaf Landaan, and being the multicultural hub that it is, it’s probably my main source of inspiration! I work full time as a Fabricator and Lift Engineer, and when I’m not working I spend my time obsessing over music, collecting vinyl, and DJing. I’m also very much into graffiti and street art, and dabble a little in that when I can; and of course I’m massively into fashion and food (hence the reason I’m here obvs!)
I don’t consider myself a chef by any means, in fact I didn’t start cooking properly until quite late in life compared to most other people I speak to about cooking. I’m just a regular guy who likes to eat good food, and who is on a journey to learn to do it as best as I can. I’m not here to show off my skills, I’m here to share my experiences both good and bad, and hopefully help people who are also on the same journey as me!
It’s hard to pin point exact influences, I guess I’ve just been absorbing my surroundings for as long as I can remember. Being a South Londoner, I’ve always been surrounded by amazing range of cuisines; from old school English pie and mash shops, amazing Turkish restaurants, and the illest Caribbean takeaways, to the not so gourmet guilty pleasure of Morley’s chicken shops! Chef wise, I’m a fan of Heston Blumenthal, Gordon Ramsey, and the peng ting that is Nigella Lawson.
