The last few weeks have been far from ‘normal‘. We’ve seen the ups and downs from our community, from front line workers to people at home adapting to new ways of living.
We have been talking to members within The Basement to find out how they have been coping, what they have been doing and their overall experiences.
As part of this documentation and the world around us currently, we decided to follow Jake Ivill.
Jake is a member of The Basement from Salford, Manchester, who recently was furloughed from his design job at a startup. Over the coming weeks, The Basement will be introducing you to people affected by the current pandemic and how their daily lives have been affected.
“I currently work in the design sector, having worked at my company for 11 months, however I was recently furloughed due to the pandemic. Not sure if I will keep my job after this is all over. I am not too worried about it. There are bigger problems.“
I’ve been trying to stay productive but even reading is feeling like a chore at the moment. I usually chew through books weekly but at the moment I’m just drained from doing nothing. One of the biggest challenges of lockdown has been not being able to sit down with my mates and chat over a meal. It’s my favourite social activity, it’s what inspires me to keep going, it helps me talk and process things and it’s just what runs life for me.
After all of this I think we’ll realise that we don’t need a fixed space to work anymore, we can get by with a desk and a bit of hustle.
We are all on this planet together, hopefully this situation will bring people closer together. It’s an absolute buzz being able to have a smoke, see the stars and hear the wildlife. I want to experience that more.
I spent my Friday documenting 24 hours of my day below…
10:30 : Wake up & lie in bed for an hour. Did the New York Times crossword today so I’m feeling quite smart.
11:00 : Coffee in the garden with my best little mate, Daisy. Ran out of decent coffee so this is some instant stuff but I’m not a snob about it.
11:30 : Alfie came to join me, reading in the garden. Try to mix up what I read during the day. Reading about Hitler and the Nazi’s.. My iPad is my best mate at this point, it’ll feature loads.
12:00 : Back in bed, spend 90% of my time in this room. The other time is in the garden smoking.
12:30 : Yung Lean dropped his new album. Vibe to that for a bit.
13:00 : Drag myself out of my bed and hope my old man hasn’t spotted another package at the door, I’m furloughed and buying loads of 110s still.
13:30 : I usually get fresh white tees every month, but at the moment I’m not so I’m doing loads of washing recently.
14:00 : Finally got a decent copy of La Haine, watch that at my desk.
15:30 : Give my old man an haircut, he moved his bird and her kid in during all this stuff so that along with the pubs being shut we haven’t spent as much time together recently so is a buzz to catch up with him.
16:00 : Forgot about the Future album so listen to that to stay relevant, actually enjoy it.
16:30 : These new pink 110s are easily my summer trainer so they’re straight on for a smoke.
17:00 : Off to see my sister from a social distance. Haven’t seen her in 10 weeks, looking forward to shooting the shit.
17:30 : She lives in a goth pub.
18:30 : Home, I’ve got some t-shirt ideas so I throw them together, I won’t ever do anything with them.
18:45 : Another package turns up, my Dad is definitely kicking me out. It’s off my bird, little care package, a few books and a plant with instructions to actually keep this one alive. When it dies I’ll blame corona.
19:00 : Chilling, I know I’ve gotta drink tonight and I’ve not eaten so I’m napping while I wait for food to turn up.
19:15 : Get mithered to death off my mate so no napping. Reading and smoking again. Initial D this time, some manga about road racing, the artwork is class.
20:00 : Food turns up, nearly 9 hours it took me to be an adult and eat. My bird is going mad at me, but I just can’t be arsed eating at the moment. I want restaurants back.
20:30 : Have a daft idea for a t-shirt for the food instagram I run with my best mate, do a bit of research while I’m waiting for facetime.
20:45 : I’m on the wine now, the night is gonna get a bit hazy after this. Gotten well into wine during the lockdown, I need pints to come back.
21:00 – 02:00 : Facetime with my bird, she doesn’t know I took this, she’d gonna go mad. Weekend piss ups on FaceTime have been a life saver in all this, proper look forward to them.
02:00 : Try reading in bed with one eye closed but it doesn’t work fall asleep some point after this.
3:00 : I took this earlier in the day but fitting to end it here rather than drunk in bed reading about road racing.
Over the coming weeks, The Basement will be introducing you to people from our community who work in different sectors, from music, fashion and design, to essential and key workers. All have been affected by the pandemic, but all in different ways. We will be taking a look at what a day in their life now looks like, and how it has changed from their previous day to day.
We have already taken a look at the day to day working lives of some of The Basement community members working in frontline health services. Click here to read about their day to day lives fighting Covid-19.
