Singularity Youth

“Singularity Youth features several essays reflecting on the growing issue of adolescent mental health”

Words & photography Ewan Waddell

“Singularity Youth” is a 188 page hardcover book both archiving and reflecting upon what it means to grow up today; it’s intended as a time capsule of modern youth perspective. The book features nine essays by young writers regarding our current generation’s unique situations and struggles, as well as photography, poetry, and illustration work by attempting to interpret their personal perspective.

The book was inspired by the ideas of the late German philosopher Martin Heidegger, who believed that at a baseline level, art should work to portray exactly what it means to exist within a society in a particular place and time.

The launch event for the book took place at the Hyde Park Book Club in Leeds, collaborating with a group of film photographers to create ‘Hyde Park on Film x Singularity Youth Launch’. The event featured lo-fi hip-hop tunes from Donut (https://soundcloud.com/dom-blencowe-1), and photography from Joe O’Shea, Rob Harper, and Ewan Waddell.

“Singularity Youth” features several essays reflecting on the growing issue of adolescent mental health, which inspired the decision for one-hundred percent of the profits to be donated to the mental health charity ‘Mind’ (www.Mind.org.uk).

The book can be found in-store or online over at Bene Culture in Birmingham and in-store at the Hyde Park Book Club in Leeds.
